In finance, MM is used to denote millions, so USD 3.5MM denotes 3,500,000 US dollars. Less common is the notation M for thousands or MMM for billions. I once saw a portfolio manager write "MM" as "M2". He was pretentious. It is perfectly acceptable in finance circles to write out "millions" or "billions", as in "$5 million" or "$5 billion". You would not do so with "thousands". For that, the notation "$5,000" would be fine.
